15 students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic Rotaract Club went to Khao Lak, Thailand to a Rotary Village in Pru Tiew to carry out mending works for the houses from 26 August to 7 September 2006.
The community rebuilding project was led by Mr Alvin Toh, who was the team leader for the trip. Mr. Jafaar Yacob was our student advisor for the trip.
The need for mending of houses arose when the Tsunami disaster hit Thailand. Houses were washed off and many were homeless. Rotary Clubs of France donated a sum of money to rebuild and relocated the houses away from the sea.
Houses were rebuilt, and it was done as quickly as possible. Speed was the main focus but not the quality in the building of houses. The houses started to leak during heavy rains especially the monsoon seasons. It caused a big inconvenience for the villagers. Roofs are in the process of being repaired by the construction incharge while the windows - we mended them.
50 houses were identified by the Rotarians and mending works were carried out over the 13 days. Drilling of holes was also done to allow water to flow and prevent seeping in after a heavy rain.
The weather there was quite unpredicable and it rained frequently. The last day was a night stay at a hotel and back to homeland - Singapore.
From this trip, everyone bonded, had lots of fun and loved the people at Thailand. We loved Thanee, our translator for the trip.
I hoped everyone felt about the same way?
This is just an introduction. Lots more input are needed by everyone! :).
Cheers
